Winter Wonderland

Oh, hello there winter. I forgot you existed. We've been a bit short on winter weather, but per usual Boston fashion, we were dumped on all in one night. It was actually quite beautiful.

Unfortunately, I had to round at the hospital this morning. Rather than taking pictures of the winter wonderland that fell upon us, I was digging my car out of the snow and swearing profusely at the weight of the snow at 7am. The bright side is I feel that 20 minutes of pure shoveling and scraping does qualify for some type of workout today.

Oh, yes, and a very Happy Birthday to my hubby! We celebrated with a nice walk around BC's campus, some Chipotle burritos, and beer. Yep, a manly birthday it was!

Getting excited for the end of call (8am needs to get here ASAP), New Year's Eve, and the beginning of the year of marathon training ahead!

Hello blogging world. It's me, Becky.

Hello blogging world. It's me, Becky.  Yes, I've decided to join the masses and start a blog. Why? For several reasons:

1. All the cool kids are doing it.  Best friends, yoga teachers, random strangers, even my husband. And you will see links to all of their blogs at some point along the way. They are part of my inspiration for this undertaking because all of their blogs are freaking awesome.  Many a recipe comes from these blogs, so get excited!

2. Keep myself motivated. I've struggled with weight for a long time; well, basically, since the beginning of time. I'm in relatively good shape compared to the general population, but certainly not where I would like to be and what I feel is where I should be health-wise. I work in healthcare and see the results of folks who have not taken care of themselves. If that isn't a wake up call, I don't know what is! Do not worry, I will not be using this as a way to track every crumb that passes my lips or chart how much water I drank today, but there will be some reference at some point to *hopefully* progress in this arena.

3. A journal to track my marathon training and hold myself accountable! Yes, I am running a marathon. The girl who cried at age 14 the night before tennis tryouts because I found out they would be expecting me to run 1 mile, all at once, before practice. Oh, how far I have come. I have now run 2 half marathons (and fully trained for a 3rd, but came down with the flu a few days before). Although I have thought both times at the mile 12 split where the half is nearly over and the full is only half finished that there was no way on God's green Earth I would ever make the turn with those crazy humans running the full, I have been talked into joining them. Thank you Lianne. She and several of my best friends (Lauren, Theresa, and Evi) have all run marathons and love it. I have decided to give the insanity a chance.

Once I decided to embark on this endeavor, I did what everyone deciding to train for a marathon does...I bought books. Well, that and those spandex running tights for sub-zero temps that look good on approximately no one. Training begins on January 1 and it's winter in Boston people! One of the books, The Nonrunner's Marathon Guide for Women: Get Off Your Butt and On with Your Training, by Dawn Dais, was absolutely hilarious. If a total nonrunner ever in her life can do this, I have hope. If you've never run this distance and enjoy page after page of sarcasm, this book is for you. Dawn, along with Hal Higdon, one of the world's marathon training gurus and author of Marathon: The Ultimate Guide: Advice, Plans, and Programs for the Half and Full Marathons, both recommended keeping a journal to track your progress, successes, occasional failures and frustrations, as a way to stay on track with your training. So, here we are, building the foundation for my tracking.

4. A place to discuss one of my favorite things in life: food! Yes, as the name of this blog suggests, I have a bit of a love affair with food. I truly am one of those people who runs that little extra so I can eat that little extra. Can't help it, foodie forever. I will be sharing recipes (mostly healthy ones but some not so much as well), restaurants, and wineries/beer breweries. I'll have a list of my favorite blogs and websites at a later date so you can check out the deliciousness aside from those I post direct links to. Get excited!

So there are my major reasons for this blog. Truly, I doubt anyone will really read this, except maybe a few good friends and some random person in Boston who sees a link to a restaurant I like around here. I would say my mom, but she can hardly turn her computer on, let alone figure out how to navigate to this page. No matter though. If even one person gets anything out of this, including just a laugh, that will be fine.
